British Butterflies

These are all butterflies on the official British list that I have seen. A couple I have only seen abroad (Swallowtail and Monarch). Many of the photographs are my own but occasionally I have had to resort to pictures supplied by other people. Whilst a number (White Admiral and most of the Fritillaries) are from my childhood as they have declined in numbers and are now difficult to see, some have gone the other way and expanded their range. For example the Comma which was restricted to Wales in my youth but is now relatively common here. A significant number have been photographed in our own garden and we have a resident population of Purple Hairstreaks in the garden making use of our mature Oak tree. The Purple Emperor is both huge and stunning to see first hand. It is a local species here in Hampshire and we have breeding colonies north, south and east of us here in Petersfield.
